In order to volunteer for Coastguard Hibiscus, you must have:
Personal requirements
A reasonable level of fitness, good English skills and good hearing are essential, as well as the ability to understand and follow instructions. You should also have practical skills for working with equipment such as stretchers, pumps and rescue tools. Being able to swim is essential.
Location
Ideally you should live within a 20 minute drive (off-peak) from our base in Gulf Harbour Marina and also be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident.
Screening
Before training begins, candidates must pass screening assessments and a Police Vetting Check
Experience and commitment
Boating experience is a bonus but not required. Each month you'll need to attend two weeknight training sessions and complete at least one weekend duty day every three weeks.
VOLUNTEER FOR COASTGUARD
Our volunteers are the heart and soul of Coastguard. Without the thousands of Coastguard volunteers nationwide answering the call of their communities, Aotearoa New Zealand would have no maritime search and rescue service.
